Luke 14:28 Commentary by Jacob Atitebi

22nd of April, 2017

TEXT: Luke  14:28

For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

Commentary by Jacob Atitebi

In today's Bible commentary, I will look into the act and words of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus made a wise statement to the multitudes. At the house of one of the chief Pharisees on the Sabbath day, great multitudes were following Jesus and He seeing this crowds of men turned to them and gave them words that they must understand to follow Him and become His disciples. It is not just about following Jesus but by following Jesus with the proper understanding and be ready to pay the price of discipleship. Jesus is not after multitudes but after those who will count the cost of being a disciple.

Everyone loved the miracles, healing, and free food. Jesus was cool, the talk of the town, and the latest fad. But He knew their hearts. He knew they desired the benefits of what He did rather than an understanding of who He was. They loved His gifts, not the life He was calling them to. So He explained what it takes to be one of His followers.

To build a tower you need to first count the cost and see if you have what it takes to build it. Likewise, to follow Jesus as His disciple you must be ready to let go of the most important thing to you. What do you value most that you can't let go for the sake of the gospel? Is it your properties or your children or your spouse? Whatever it is, you must first count the cost and be ready to pay the price.
